Holiday to Turkey for the 2006 Total Solar Eclipse

Out of Town Meeting for Cardiff Society

Cardiff AS held a special meeting on March 29th at a new venue - Manavgat in Turkey and near the centre line of the total eclipse. We were joined by a number of friends from around the UK including Bristol, Leicester, Kent, Suffolk, Surrey, Yorkshire, Somerset and Northern Ireland. All enjoyed spectacular views of the main event in clear blue and then darkening skies. Our party drew the attention of some local Turkish villagers who were very friendly and keen to ensure that we knew the timings of this most awesome of celestial events. The setting was very exotic on the banks of a wide river with an impressive and highly decorated mosque close by, and the regular summons from the minaret. Eclipse over we enjoyed the views of a local beauty spot at the nearby water falls and then proceeded with the very serious business of holidaying ……

The following week was devoted to relaxing in Antalya, visiting historic Greco-Roman sites such as Perge and Aspensos. A particular highlight was a boat cruise out amongst the islands to view the sunken city of Simena. Then whilst most of the men in the party walked to the castle on the top of the island of Kekova, the women found a delightful habour café to view the scenery and the absolutely clear surrounding blue water.

A drive through the snow capped mountains with their remote peasant villages took us for a few days to the Agean resort of Kusadasi. A visit to a family owned rug making company demonstrated the skill of young female workers, taking in some cases years to complete complex patterns in silk, all by hand.

We visited the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the most important centres of the ancient World and the remains here are stunning, as was the Temple of Apollo. It seemed only fitting that we had viewed such a spectacular celestial event surrounded by such impressive historic sites.

And now some Photographs, Videos and Descriptions from Eclipse Day,
by some of our intrepid crew.
