Night Observing with the Open University at Brecon - 28 June 2019
On Friday, 28th June, the Society's outreach team made a second visit inside a week to the Brecon Beacons National Park. This time, to support Dark Sky Wales (DSW) with an immersive night sky experience for the OU tied in with the popular TV series The Planets currently showing on BBC2 and hosted by Professor Brian Cox.
It was a pleasant change to set up telescopes in the light and warmth of a setting Sun. But this was an event that would not have happened if some resourceful people from DSW and CAS, with the help of a local, had not been able to remove a fallen tree that was found blocking the main route up to the Brecon Beacons Visitor Centre!
Obstruction removed, over a hundred members of the public were able to hear a talk in the DSW planetarium and two extra talks by OU lecturers, and also enjoy superb views of Jupiter over Pen y Fan from a variety of CAS telescopes.
Yet another successful undertaking - and the CAS team were able to get away just before midnight!
